NEWSPAPER CIRCULATION: Print Continues To Decline By Double Digits
The Press Gazette reports that daily newspaper print circulation in the United States fell to 1.94 million in September 2024, a fraction of circulation three decades ago when the USA Today and New York Times routinely combined for daily circulation twice that figure.
Currently in the United States there is not a daily newspaper which has a print edition which reaches more than 500,000 people for the first time in over a century.
The biggest drop for a single paper was the Los Angeles Times which saw its daily circulation drop by more than 25% to 79,000 from 110,000 a year earlier. For reference the Times well into the 21st century regularly broke a million in Sunday and 800,000 in daily circulation.
All this comes at a time when news has never been more available, the number of consumers of news has never been higher, and the amount of time spent by the average person using media often is greater than any other activity in their day including sleeping.
