Analysis: Texas Employs More Teachers Than Any Other State With Over 402,000
According to an ongoing analysis from the National Center for Education Statistics, Texas employs more K-12 teachers than any other state despite having nearly 800,000 students less than the nation’s most populous state, California.
In the most recent data available, Texas has approximately 5,847,039 students enrolled in over 10,886 public and private K-12 schools being taught by 402,782 teachers meaning that there is one teacher for every 14.51 students and 537 students per school site on average.
In California, there are over 323,486 teachers at 13,465 schools teaching 6,538,693 students creating a student teacher ratio of 20.2:1 and a roughly estimated school size of 486 students.
While both states seem on average to be meeting the often stated goal of roughly 500 students per school site and 20 students per teacher, the AWE will continue to report from available educational data that tracks classroom performance and its long term effects as part of our goal to provide analysis that eases the challenges for employers and leaders to create a vibrant and growing marketplace that allows everyone the opportunity to build a career.
