SpaceX Financial Filings Show Major Revenue For Compute Time Rentals

As SpaceX prepares for a presumed record breaking initial public offering, its finance statements and those of its large subsidiaries like generative intelligence xAI offer a glimpse into how the largest players in the rapidly expanding space are organized and operator according to reporting from aibusiness.com.

One of the most interesting sources of revenue for xAI is a multiyear computing capacity rental to Anthropic which accounts for nearly $1.25 billion in monthly revenue for xAI for 300 Megawatts of compute time. The contract, which can be cancelled on 90 days notice could generate up to $40 billion for xAI if Anthropic were to use the reserved time through the end of the agreement in 2029.

In its public filings, SpaceX stated “This structure allows us to monetize unused compute capacity in our infrastructure, while still permitting reallocation of the capacity for our own internal initiatives if needed in the future." It also indicated that it expected to announce similar arrangements with other generative AI organizations.

Throughout the development of the computer and telecommunications industries the rental of additional capacity has allowed companies to continue to innovate while their internal capacity is developed and it is clear that the intensive compute demands for generative AI and related technology are continuing to use that established model.
