100 Million Could Access Internet From Satellite Based Services By 2034 Like Starlink

Today, a little over 11 million access the Internet cloud via satellite based services like Starlink but within 8 years that number could grow to 100 million or more according to a recent analysis reported in lightreading.com.

Currently, Starlink is the dominant and youngest player in the satellite space which was previously dominated by HughesNet, DirectTV, and others. With 10.3 million subscribers globally, up from 1 million at the end of 2022, Starlink also stands to expand the fastest as well with over 11,000 satellites in orbit and 9,000 in daily operation.

In addition, over the last four years, nearly 50% of Starlink’s customers are either receiving the internet at their location for the first time or are using the internet with generations old technology indicating that a large portion of those attracted to satellite providers are upgrading to faster service rather than upgrading from existing high speed internet.

The market promises to be lucrative as well as Starlink is providing an outsized portion of the income for a potential initial public offering for its parent SpaceX. In public filings, SpaceX is reporting that its corporate revenue was $18.7 billion annually last year with just Starlink alone providing $11.4 billion.

High quality internet service is absolutely critical to most organizations and the Association of Western Employers will continue to report on this part of the marketplace in the coming months.
