CNBC: Containers From China Down 51.9% To West Coast Ports April to May 2025

CNBC is reporting that China shipments of containers of export products dropped by 51.9% from the third week of April to the first week in May 2025 according to an analysis by Port Observer.

For the week of April 20 through the 26, China completed landings of 120,608 while for the week ending May 10 there are 62,568 planned for West Coast ports.

While the trade negotiations centers around tariffs on Chinese goods coming into the United States, Chinese manufacturers and shippers seem to be willing to stage their exports for arrival well into the future in hopes that agreements can be struck between the world’s two largest economies.

Currently China accounts for nearly half of all freight globally as measure by container equivalents or TEU’s.

With West Coast port activity accounting for nearly 1 in 7 jobs according to recent economic impact studies we will continue to track this emerging story.
